Black Barbie & Ken’s Nigerian Traditional Wedding

Black Barbie & Kens Nigerian Traditional Wedding black barbie nigerian wedding1

So I got bored sometime last December, and then came across French photographer Beatrices’ Barbie and Kens’ wedding shoot, and with some inspiration from the black Barbie shoot on Italian Vogue, I decided to create a Nigerian Traditional wedding shoot with black Barbie and Ken … it started up as a pretty simple shoot that would have taken about a week or so, and ended up taking up to 5 months. I had to enlist my wife to help out with the outfits, as well as with searching the internet for all the little accessories.  Anyway, I’m glad its now done, and glad I can get rid of the dolls … I was beginning to get weird looks from my son whenever I came home with a barbie and he’s asking if was for me, or for his baby sister …

Anyway hope you like the shoot …

Stella Duru - Obinna, clearly you have to remain bored for longer and you best go and collect the dolls from the trash van you threw them in because you have started a series that you must necessarily continue… you tagged this Nigerian Traditional Wedding but you must be aware that this depicts the Yoruba Traditional Wedding Ceremony and given that we have 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, you have 249 Nigerian Traditional Weddings to showcase…LOL! more importantly given that you are an ibo man and I am an ibo lady, I hope your business mind has evaluated the business side of this (asides from the artistic part)… as I would advise that you seek out the makers of black barbie and ken with a business proposal to help them with clothing customised dolls with different occasions for sale to Nigerian kids in the diaspora (LOL) or even for kids in Nigeria… and please bring the relevant contracts for my review… for a fee as your lawyer o…. WELL DONE… ME LIKE… REAL PROUD… GOOD JOB!June 15, 2012 – 12:37 am

Anu Young - This is just pure talent…your attention to detail is highly commendable and I would love to see more of your work. It is hard and with need of a lot of raw talent for a photographer to show the true and beautiful expressions of individual(s)..but to be able to now do it effortlessly with the use of dolls! shows that you are truly an amazing photographer…an inspiration really…<3 <3 this work!June 15, 2012 – 12:47 am

Abi - I’m amazed at the attention to detail and it truly captures the essence of Yoruba weddings. I had previously said I wouldn’t do a traditional wedding when I get married but on seeing these, I’m having serious second thoughts. Its just wonderfully put together though I’m wondering why Ken (Kola)? has a really dark body compared to his face? I have the same thing but not as dark as his, just a shade.
I’m defo sending friends to your site, its good as a reference point to one of our ethnic marriages and something to make our children proud of their skin colour and heritage. A job excellently done.June 18, 2012 – 2:51 am

Barbie’s Traditional Yoruba Wedding - Muse Origins - [...] The imagery is so appealing, and surprisingly accurate. Obi photographs the dolls from the beginning of the day to the end – from dressing up to drunken party. The wedding features the Groom greeting Barbie’s parents with a traditional Yoruba deep bow, the couple and their guests getting down on the dancefloor, and the spraying of money during the first dance that is significantly present in any Nigerian wedding. LISA GALLAHAR - I am so inspired by your patience and persistence in this huge undertaking. I was going to college trying to get my degree in Photography and had many photography assignments that had to be completed and shared with the class. This seems like a whole semesters assignments all joined and rolled up into one long awesome slideshow. The attention to detail and placement of the dolls limbs was so perfect and I cannot even express how gorgeous the wardrobe was. Your depth of field was so perfect in many of the shots. The shot that made me laugh was the one of the disc jockey, she is priceless! Thank you for sharing your work.July 6, 2012 – 3:27 pm
